I've 'read' just over half. I'm skimming it, having found the language so interesting that it would take me 5 weeks to read this one book. I know I'll read it again slowly when I have the time.
It's like creme brulee - too rich to read all in one go - so I'm pretending it's just plain custard - still yummy but wolfing it instead or skating over the glaze.
Please, can someone who actually knows what's what tell me the purpose of the italics?
I can't claim to know what's what, Ellen, and I'm only 50 pages in, but I'm taking it that the italics are quotes in the broadest sense - remembered phrases and expressions, bits of song etc. The best I can do!
