If these books were chosen because of their 'experimental' use of prose, should Hilary Mantel be here? Gaby Wood of The Telegraph muses... (click the link to read Gaby's article at Telegraph.co.uk)
What do you think? Were you surprised to see Mantel on this rather rarified list?
I think she should definitely be on the list.! Wolf Hall was brilliantly written, so engaging, so wonderfully descriptive of the period, so gripping and poetic. No, not experimental, just a classic of it's kind, and one which will be remembered for years. I'm assuming Bring up the Bodies will be the same. What does anyone else think?
ReplyDeleteGaby Wood argues that Mantel IS experimental, though she doesn't elucidate much on why she thinks so. I'm glad to see that she encourages those who have not yet 'Wolf Hall' to dive straight in to 'Bring Up the Bodies'. I've not read 'Wolf Hall'. (People may begin to wonder what I have read. In fact, I begin to wonder myself. But really1 I have read a few books in my day!)
DeleteThis will be a good discussion for tonight! ( if we have time). I'm sorry too, and not a little surprised, that Rache Joyce didn't make it....
